When you need help — who, how, and what they actually do

Needing help is not a personality. It is a practical problem: who is awake, who will not laugh, and how you get the words out when your mouth has gone on strike. This page is the directory. The teen guide is the bigger picture and the tools.

I’m Charlie. I will not tell you that asking is “the bravest thing you can do” and leave you to invent a speech. Copy a line. Call. Text. Stay.

Right now
You do not have to explain it well.

Childline0800 1111 (free, 24/7, under 19). Call or 1-2-1 chat on childline.org.uk
Shout — text SHOUT to 85258 (UK, free, 24/7). Not the US keyword HELLO.
Samaritans116 123 (anyone, any age)
Immediate danger to life — 999 or A&E

Signs it is more than a bad Wednesday

You do not need the whole list. One of those, stuck, is enough to tell someone. You are not wasting their time.

How to get the words out

“I’m not doing great and I don’t know what to do with it. Can we talk?”

“Can you help me book the GP / speak to pastoral? I can’t start the sentence.”

“It’s not an emergency. I just need a person.”

If home is not safe to tell: Childline, a teacher, a friend’s parent, a coach. Writing counts — text, note, chat. If talking out loud is impossible, Shout or Childline’s 1-2-1 chat exist for that exact problem.

Call versus text

Call if you need a voice in the room, you are in crisis, or typing would take too long. Text or chat if someone is in the next room, talking feels like jumping off a wall, or you need ten seconds before each reply. Both are real help. Use the less scary door.

What they will and will not do

They will listen, ask what is going on, and help you think about next steps. They will not usually tell your parents or school. The exception is if you or someone else is in immediate danger — then they have to act. You can ask “how does confidentiality work?” as the first sentence. That is a normal sentence on these lines.

They will not make you “cheer up,” give you a detention, or demand a perfect story. They chose this job. You are not a burden to a helpline. That is the whole point of a helpline.

UK lines and sites that are actually for you

Childline
0800 1111 — 24/7, free, under 19
Anything: home, school, sex, identity, bullying, self-harm. Call, chat, or email. childline.org.uk
Shout
Text SHOUT to 85258 — 24/7, free
UK crisis text line. Keyword is SHOUT, not HELLO. giveusashout.org
Samaritans
116 123 — 24/7, any age
You do not have to be suicidal to call. samaritans.org
The Mix
0808 808 4994 · themix.org.uk
Under 25s. Mental health, money, housing, relationships. Useful if you have aged out of “child” in your head but not in the system.
YoungMinds
youngminds.org.uk — Parents Helpline 0808 802 5544
Guides for young people. The phone line is for parents and carers (Mon, Thu, Fri 9.30am–4pm; Tue & Wed 9.30am–6pm), not a 24/7 teen crisis line. If you are the young person in a hole, use Childline or Shout.
Mind
0300 123 3393 (Mon–Fri 9am–6pm)
Information and local support. They have pages written for young people. mind.org.uk
Your GP, school, Kooth
Book · tell pastoral · kooth.com if your area has it
A GP can refer you to NHS children and young people’s mental health services. School pastoral or the counsellor can start that too. Kooth is free online help in many (not all) areas — check rather than assume.

Papyrus HOPELINE went into administration in September 2026. We do not list it as a live service. Adult-facing list: Get Support UK (works with JavaScript off).

If the thought is “I don’t want to be here”

This can pass. Another human makes it pass faster.
Right now it feels like a fact. It is a symptom of pain. Tell someone in the room, or these:

Childline 0800 1111 · Samaritans 116 123 · text SHOUT to 85258 · 999 or A&E

Specific situations

Bullying
Childline 0800 1111
Tell pastoral. Keep screenshots. Family Lives also publishes advice for young people and parents: familylives.org.uk
Abuse
Childline 0800 1111 · 999 if you are in danger
Physical, sexual, emotional — not your fault. A teacher’s safeguarding job includes this. You do not have to protect the adult who is hurting you.
LGBTQ+
Childline · The Mix
You do not have to have a neat label to get a kind adult. If home is not safe for this conversation, start off-home.
Self-harm
Childline · NHS self-harm pages
It is often an attempt to turn a feeling you cannot hold into something you can see. Safer coping exists. NHS: self-harm. If you are in danger, 999.
Eating
beateatingdisorders.org.uk
If food, weighing, or “earning” meals has become the main plot, tell someone early. Beat is the specialist UK charity. GP as well.
Drugs and alcohol
talktofrank.com
Honest information, no lecture-voice. If use is how you get through the day, that is also Childline / GP territory.

A note if you are a boy who was told to handle it

Handle it by using a phone number. That is still handling it. Quiet is not the same as okay. Childline, The Mix, and your GP are not “for girls.”

A note if you were told you are being dramatic

Pain is not a performance. Getting help is logistics. YoungMinds’ site and Childline were built because this is common, not because you are extra.

More of the picture: teen guide · puberty and your brain · friendships · tools in the app (breath, pad, games) that stay on this device.

Common questions

Who can I text if I can’t call?

Text SHOUT to 85258 — that’s the UK crisis text line, free, 24/7. Childline also has a confidential 1-2-1 chat on childline.org.uk. You do not need to use the US keyword HELLO.

What’s the YoungMinds Parents Helpline number?

0808 802 5544. It’s for parents and carers, not a 24/7 teen crisis line. Hours: Mon, Thu, Fri 9.30am–4pm; Tue and Wed 9.30am–6pm. If you are a young person in crisis, use Childline 0800 1111 or Shout.

Will Childline tell my parents?

Childline keeps what you say confidential except in rare cases where you or someone else is in immediate danger. You can ask them how confidentiality works at the start of a call or chat.

I’m 19. What do I use?

Childline is under 19. Use Samaritans 116 123, text SHOUT to 85258, The Mix (under 25s), or your GP.

🫧 A gentle note

MindBubble is a tool to use — not medical advice, a diagnosis, or a miracle cure. It's a calm space to explore yourself, understand a little more about how the mind works, and try some coping tools and games to help you settle. It isn't a substitute for professional support, therapy, or treatment. Any services or organisations we signpost are independent — we're not affiliated with them, we just share resources we've found helpful.

If things feel like too much or you're in crisis: Childline 0800 1111 (free, 24/7) · text SHOUT to 85258 · or call 999 in an emergency.
